5 Ways to Go Zero Waste in Your Kitchen

The best thing you can do today to help preserve the earth is to go zero waste.  This is one of the best ways to do so. If you have already mastered the task, then great you can always do a little more. If you are not into it, don't worry, we have you covered. Begin at home. Right from your own house and make the difference. When you talk about a zero waste home, the first place that comes to mind is your kitchen. Let's look at some ways you can go zero waste in your kitchen.
Move towards reusable containers
One way to keep your kitchen free of waste is by not letting waste enter it in the first place. Try to keep reusable containers with you while shopping, especially the glass jars that are easy to fill, clean and store. This way you will also be letting other people know how important it is to not use disposable containers and how to be wise about limiting waste disposal. And, for small loose items, you can keep organic cotton bags that are also easy to carry. This is the most common way people begin the zero waste lifestyle.
Buy in Bulk
A trip to the grocery store every other day can consume a lot of time and be costly as well. When buying your groceries in bulk, you not only save time and money but you also keep extra waste away from your kitchen. Bulk means buying things that can be stored for long periods of time and can also be placed in reusable containers. When buying things with a short life, try to buy exactly the amount you need. When you buy extra, this can lead to throwing away a lot of waste which won't help you or the planet in any way.
Also, buying fewer goods will make you prepare things as you need them in your kitchen. For example, you can make a salad from the garden or buttermilk in your kitchen easily without having to go out to buy it. So, if you get short of something, you can find a solution within your kitchen and make it a place of zero waste.

Have a compost system
People throw away a lot of waste each day, without even realizing that most of it can be recycled or composted. All you need is a bin and some space. You you can easily compost that waste and feed your garden with it. This way the extra food will be utilized, and your garden will be full of nutrients and fertilized. Also, the impact it will have on planet earth will be remarkable since you will no longer be irresponsible throwing away foods.

Say no to disposables
Say no to disposables, not only in your kitchen but everywhere. There are so many alternatives now to avoid using plastic throwaways. Learn to incorporate a recycling habit.  You only need to use things that are recyclable and recycle things you use as much as you can. This will go a long ways towards having a zero waste kitchen.
Get creative with food waste
You just might want to think twice before you throw away the fruit and vegetable waste. So you know the leftover herbs, coffee grounds, citrus peels, lemon and orange rinds and pretty much all the other stems and rinds of fruits and vegetables can either add flavor to your food or they can be insect repellents. Yes I said insect repellents. Learn to put to use everything that you possibly can.  You will be surprised at how resourceful you can be.
